Canadian Soprano Sophie Bisson holds a B.A. in music from Queen’s University and an M.A. in music from the University of Montreal. She has been fortunate to pursue her vocal studies with distinguished professors such as Marie Laferrière, Guy Robitaille and Robert Loewen.

In July 2009 Sophie made her European solo debut in Purcell's Dido and Aeneas with the Assisi Music Festival in Italy. At that time she was also able to coach with Baroque Music Specialist Gloria Banditelli. In August she attended Early Music Vancouver where she had the opportunity to study with Ellen Hargis, Michael Jarvis, Ray Nurse and Steven Adby. In June 2010 Sophie spent time in Malibu California at SongFest where she worked with Lisa Saffer and Paul Sperry. She was also honoured to work on unpublished repertoire with composer Ben More. In August Sophie joined LESIVA in New Mexico where she had the great privilege of studying with Linda Roark-Strummer and Peter Strummer as well as coach with Julian Reed (Arizona Opera) and Mark Armstrong (Tulsa Opera).

Sophie supports the development and creation of new music. Her very first engagement was creating the role of Couventine in Musique pour ma soeur. During her undergraduate studies, she combined her desire to perform with research on Canadian Opera. The result was a catalogue of Twentieth Century Canadian Operas under the supervision of Canadian composer, and Juno Award Winner, Dr. John Burge. She recently published an article version of her master’s thesis, also on Canadian Opera, in the journal Intersections.

Sophie has a passion for languages. She is fluent in English, French and Italian, with a working knowledge of Latin and Spanish. She wishes her German was better and she’s working on it!

While not singing, Sophie volunteers for Room to Read (www.roomtoread.org), a global not-for-profit organisation that raises funds to provide literacy and gender equity in education.
